Mikumi National Park

Mikumi is perhaps the most accessible and popular of Tanzania's national parks. The main feature in here is the open grasslands of the Mikumi flood plain which is bordered on two sides by mountain ranges.

The Mikumi Floodplain is the main feature of the Park along with the bordering mountain ranges. The vegetation is made up of woodland, grassland and swamp areas. Its annexed location to Selous lends to its reputation for diversity and abundance of wildlife. Besides resident lions that are known to climb trees, other species found here include: great herds of buffalo, elephant, eland, giraffe, hartebeest, hippo, impala, leopard, warthog, African Wild dog and wildebeest.

Wildebeest...

Reproductive Health Assessment (RHA) Toolkit for Conflict-

Affected Women Among the world’s 34 million displaced people, approximately 80% are women and children and are vulnerable to abuses and negative health outcomes during crisis. Women often become heads of households because they are widowed or deserted during displacement and become sole providers and caretakers of their families. It is essential to have appropriate reproductive health services that will—

  • Ensure safe pregnancies and deliveries,
  • Meet family planning needs,
  • Prevent and treat sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV/AIDS, and
  • Respond to and prevent gender-based violence (GBV).

A note from a team member...

Jambo!
It has been absolutely crazy here. It is nonstop. I really enjoyed the city of Arusha and all of the site seeing so far. When we arrived in Dar a Salaam is when I realized how much I miss simple things in life...It is HUMID in Dar compared to the cool breezes in Arusha!
We went on safari and saw all sorts of animals. The lion we saw was sleeping a yard away! I got some awesome closeups. When we were leaving baboons were sitting in the middle of the street. We could have reached out and touched them!
We arrived last night and we had a few adventures with chasing down the critters in our room... the worst part was, when I went to pull down the covers and close my eyes for the night, what was waiting to snuggle in with me?... a baby cockroach. We killed 3 big ones already... I am becoming pro. Yeah it def is not 5 star quality...I miss my bed.
We just met with Engineers Without Borders today and they brought us to one of the wells and taught us all about how they test the water and about boiling it as well.
We are going to be meeting with the CDC tomorrow which is exciting. I am learning sooo much! I can't wait to see more.

Meeting with Engineers Without Borders

...and Bagamoyo:

Bagamoyo was recently designated as Tanzania’s seventh world heritage site and is the oldest town in Tanzania. Bagamoyo's history has been influenced by Arab and Indian traders, the German colonial government and Christian missionaries. Although Bagamoyo is no longer the busy port city that it once was, Tanzania’s Department of Antiquities is working to revitalize the town and maintain the dozens of ruins in and around Bagamoyo.
Bagamoyo was the major slave trading post in East Africa. Bagamoyo, which means ‘lay down your heart’ in Swahili, was probably given this name because Bagamoyo was the last place the slaves would stay in Tanzania before being shipped off to foreign lands. Although the slave trade officially ended in 1873, slaves continued to be sold and traded in Bagamoyo through the end of the nineteenth century.
